My wonderful wife booked this DreamTrip to celebrate my 50th birthday. It was our first time traveling to the Dominican. One of the first things we noticed is the flights to Punta Cana cost us more than our stay at the Barcelo! How crazy is that. We shop around when it comes to flights and we are not brand loyal when it comes to airlines. Anyway…that is for another blog and another time!

Once we arrived in the beautiful Dominican Republic and made it through customs we found our transportation to the resort. Our trip included an airport transfer so that was seamless and easy. Thank you DreamTrips!

Once we arrived at the Barcelo in Punta Cana that is when the fun started. A bellman opened the vehicle door and said, “welcome” and we were greeted by a young lady that immediately said “welcome Mr. and Mrs. Clawson” and handed us cool towels to put around our necks. Hows that for a welcome and greeting. Impressive.
She personally guided us by walking us to the Premium Level lounge area. She sat us in two very nice wing back chairs and explained that a guest service representative would be with us shortly. Just after she said that a staff member was there and handed both of us a glass of champagne! The lounge was very large and had finger foods, cookies, fruit, and soda at your disposal. It was not long before the quest service representative greeted us and proceeded to check us in. This is a BIG deal, because as we walked in we walked right past the general check in area and that area was packed with people! Expedited check-in is a VERY nice perk! Thanks again DreamTrips! The quest service rep attached the all-inclusive bracelet to our wrists and this ALSO served as our door key….too cool! Once check in was complete we headed to our room on foot because we love to check out a place when we first arrive. To our surprise, our luggage was already in the room!

The room was very spacious (see the pictures) and was spectacular. The shower was a beautifully tiled rain shower and plenty of room for both of us showering at the same time! Double vanity sinks, room safe, fully stocked fridge, coffee maker, iron and ironing board, plush robes and slippers. The view from the blaconey was ocean view and looked into a well manicured court yard. The jacuzzi tub on the balcony was awesome and it had a curtain for privacy.

The resort itself is just amazingly lovely. We stayed at a Barcelo in Cancun, Mexico and the resort there was perfectly manicured just like this one!

Nightly entertainment
The entertainment each night was superb. Dancing and signing. A Micheal Jackson impersonator show rocked the house. Diane and I looked forward to 9 pm show every night. The acts were “Vegas” type of shows. Very well done.

Cuisine
The food at the specialty restaurants was spectacular. We were always allow to order as much as we wanted. The service was top notch. One of the benefits of an all-inclusive that we have found is that the food at the specialty restaurants have always been simply amazing and we have stayed at a Sandals twice (Grenada and Antigua) , a Barcello twice (Punta Cana and Playa Del Carmen), and the Royalton in Cancun. HOWEVER, EXCEPT for the Royalton in Cancun, the buffet is just average. I mean, don’t get me wrong, still good to very good….just not spectacular like the speciality restaurants. Which, i my opinion, makes total sense. The Royalton in Cancun deserves a mention for its buffet…it was spectacular too!

U-Spa
Our DreamTrips Platinum membership included a 50 minute couples massage…NEVER pass up a massage! If you are guy and feel too “studly” to get a massage…well you are simply missing out! Not boasting, just stating where our experiences has given us a level of comparison. In my opinion, there is never a bad massage, just some better than others! The spa is VERY nice and our massage was one of the best we have ever had. As a side note, best massage we have had anywhere…in Mount Airy, NC (believe it or not) with Kim Combs at Body and Sole Wellness (276) 971-6834 . These massages on these amazing properties can be quite pricey. If a massage is a “throw in” for your vacation then by all means take advantage. We have never had a bad experience at any resort in terms of the spa. Relax!!!!

The beach area was amazing. Beautiful tall palm trees to help shade the nearly white sand. Beautiful crystal clear water of the Caribbean ALWAYS calls my name. There is plenty of water sports available for the thrill seeker or someone just wanting to sail. There were activities all day long, everyday. If you want to stay busy and be in the middle of all the action, then stay by the main pool. The activities director will keep you engaged! If not, then drift to the edges of the property and enjoy a quiet area on the beach.
In summary, we would recommend Punta Cana for a vacation. We love the Caribbean and Punta Cana would NOT be our first choice. However, just like pizza and massages…never a bad one, just some better than others. When you are looking to travel to Punta Cana, make sure you look at air fare first. I am sure in time flight costs will decrease, but you need to evaluate costs of flights, not just the resort. There are some amazing resort in the DR! The Hard Rock for one. We have many friends stay at the Hard Rock and they LOVED it!. The Barcello chain of resorts are tough to beat for sure. As with any travel, be smart and aware of your surroundings. So what are you waiting for!!!! Go get that passport!
