The Royalton Riviera Resort and Spa, Cancun, Mexico

Royalton Riviera Resort and Spa

Cancun, Mexico

Royalton Luxury All-inclusive

We stayed at the Royalton August 19th-22nd and August 26th-29th. See my blog post discussing The Fives that we stayed at from the 22nd-26th. We have stayed at many all-inclusives from Sandals in Antigua and Grenada to the Grand Palladium in Jamaica.  We have experienced the Barcelo Bavaro in the Dominican and The Fives in Playa Del Carmen. The Royalton ranks up as one of the nicest places we have ever stayed.  I will break down for you the particulars of the resort and I hope you find this “review” valuable.

We were greeted by the friendliest workers of ANY resort we have EVER been to. From the bellman to housekeeping to the front desk and everyone in between! It really was amazing how friendly all these people were! The checkin process was simple, friendly, and painless. The front desk person attached a “bracelet” onto our wrist and that also served as our room key. The cool part about that is we didn’t have to keep up with a key, just had to remember where our room was and the number…which was a challenge at first because of the size of the resort and too many adult beverages!IMG_E7254.JPG

The resort is large and has 840 rooms and suites. We stayed in two different room types. The Junior Suite

and The Luxury Junior Suite in the adults only “Hideaway” area. Both rooms had a jetted bath tub made for two, dual vanities, and an amazing rain shower with two overhead rain shower heads and a wall mounted flexible hosed shower head to get to those hard to reach places!

All the rooms were equipped with an in-room safe with usb charging station INSIDE the safe, usb charging stations by the bed, automatic lighted closets, slippers, and robes. The Luxury Junior Suite had a jacuzzi tub on the balcony.

There are 11 pools and 1 children’s splash park. IMG_E7494We mainly stayed at the “Hideaway” pool and the large main pool. Most of the pools had swim up bars with access from the walk ways also.

We didn’t get in the children’s splash park, but we did walk around the area many times. Absolutely looked like a great time and great for young and older kids to age 12-14. IMG_E7495I think older teens would find the area to “kidsee”. I wanted to play though!

There are 9 specialty restaurants and a HUGE buffet available for you. IMG_E7248The buffet was easily the BEST buffet we have ever experienced. From the selection to the quality. It was outstanding. Mexican, Italian, Japanese, American fare, etc…it was lacking NOTHING! The specialty restaurants knocked our socks off too.  I admit I copied and pasted the breakdown of restaurants from their website….WHY? because the description really is perfect and accurate!

One feature I loved is that you don’t have to have reservations for any of the restaurants. However, I HIGHLY recommend you do get reservations for ZEN Japanese Cuisine, Grazie Italian, and Hunter Steakhouse. These places fill up quickly. Once you eat at one of those places you will know why. It is that good.

I am doing the same thing for the bars. Their description is totally accurate. If you go thirsty while on the resort it is your own fault. They have “top-shelf” spirits and plenty of beers to offer. Again, if your thing is adult beverages…you will not be lacking at any time unless you choose to!IMG_E7247

The entire resort has excellent wi-fi. We never had any issues with social media usage at all.IMG_E7252

I did go workout ONCE while we were there. The intention is always to go more often…but you know how that goes. The facility was very nice and more “clubish” than what I am accustomed to. I have more of a YMCA type of experience back at home. Much more aerobic equipment than free weights. Treadmills, bikes, stair climbers everywhere. They even have a tennis court outside on top of the building! The free weight area is mainly dumbbells and a few cable machines. You can easily get a decent workout in this fitness center. Water and towels are available, and the desk was manned the entire time I was in there. You enter into the fitness center through the main entrance of the spa. Turn left to go into the Spa and straight for the fitness center. The Spa has a full range of services, but we did not partake so I cannot comment on the quality. If the services match the décor then I am sure it is top notch.

There were plenty of daytime and nighttime activities. There is a full menu of water sports that we did not experience. They had nightly shows, but for us, in our opinion the shows were just average. They had separate shows for the “Hideaway’ area. One night the resort had a chocolate party in the “Hideaway” area that was amazing. All sorts of chocolates to choose from while listening to a live saxophone player belt out some tunes.

The weather was amazing all week with highs in the 80’s and lows in the 80’s! Not much variation. Not humid at all. August is a great time to visit Mexico weather wise, HOWEVER during August and September the area battles seaweed in massive amounts. This particular “season” was much worse than normal according to locals.  Workers tried to remove the seaweed every day. IMG_E7260The smell of the seaweed kept us from much beach time. The beach itself was light beige not white and felt great on our bare feet. Plenty of beach area to walk and lounge on. Further out you could see waters that was free of seaweed and those waters where a beautiful turquoise color. The big lesson learned about the water and beach area is…don’t go during August- October if water sports is what you are in to. Now don’t get me wrong…still a very beautiful place!!!IMG_E7255

We LOVED our stay at The Royalton Riviera Resort and Spa and Cancun. We have purposely avoided Mexico and Cancun in particular because of all the negative press, but we were blown away. The value of the dollar in Mexico is so great that I see why so many people choose to vacation in Mexico. A huge plus for us was how amazingly nice everyone was during our stay.IMG_E7253

I would highly recommend The Royalton Riviera Resort and Spa to couples and families.  If you want a kid free experience you need to stay in the “Hideaway” area of the resort.  IMG_E7589

In my opinion, I would consider The Royalton for any vacation to Cancun, Mexico.

  1. I was with you until I read “11 children’s pools”. I’d be running for the Hideaway and never looking back!
